Which newsgroup should you post to?
|
Please see also Suggestions for Posting.
There are many groups that deal with different aspects of Word, and it can be a bit confusing to work out which one is the most appropriate for your
question. Below is a list of them all, each one with a brief description of the subject area for that group.
Please try to post your question to just one group. If you feel
that your question belongs in more than one group, please include all group
addresses in a single post (cross-posting) rather than send a separate message
to each group (multi-posting). Multi-posting infuriates those who spend an hour
or so answering your question in one group, only to find that someone else has
already done so for your separate message in a different group!
It may be useful to read the recent messages in a group to see whether it really is dealing with subjects similar to your question. Your question may
even have been asked recently by someone else, and an answer already posted.
Newsreader Access to the Newsgroups
Newsreader access is much faster than web-based access, and places you fully
in control. If you have a newsreader installed, you can set it
up using the instructions below.
For Mac click here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/support/newsgroupsetup.asp
For PC click here:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/
On the PC, you will see a message saying that you are
not subscribed to any newsgroups for this account, and asking if you would like
to view the list of groups. Say yes. Wait a minute or two: there are
about 2,000 groups in the list.
For questions about Word, the names of all of the groups you want begin with
"microsoft.public.word..." so you need to wait for the whole list to arrive,
then scroll to the bottom.
The list at the end of this article tells you which groups to use for what.
Web Access to the Newsgroups
If the above link did not work, or if your newsreader just sat there doing
nothing, or issued an error message, chances are your access to newsgroups has
been blocked by your system administrator, particularly if you are at work
right now!
If you were to explain to your Help Desk that you were trying to get
free, no-charge, expert help with Word — without
bothering them, you might find that your network access very suddenly
improves in the next few days {grin}.
In the meantime, the links below are to the browser-based interface to the
newsgroups. Just click to go directly to the chosen group.

If you find the links above are too slow, try a
web-based
version hosted by Google.
English-speaking newsgroups
The following links take you directly to Microsoft's browser-based interface
for the group. Note: these have been tested in Internet Explorer 6: they
probably won't work in any other browser, and they certainly won't work if you
have pop-ups blocked!

Obsolete Newsgroups
Several microsoft.public.* newsgroups have been discontinued
in some cases, many years ago; but because of the way
the Usenet works, Microsoft can't stop people posting to them.
One such group is "microsoft.public.word.general": it is still
out there on the public Usenet, but if you post to it, the most likely result
is that you will receive a large number of emails offering to increase the size
of some part of your body {blush!} ...
MVPs rarely go to the discontinued groups,
and nor do the more knowledgeable non-MVPs. You will usually get better
and quicker answers if you post your questions in one of the current
newsgroups, which are hyperlinked below:
